Community Service

Community service is unpaid work performed by a person or group of people for the benefit and betterment of their community contributing to a noble cause. AT Bonnabel Magnet Academy, students partake in community service individually and through campus organizations such as Entourage, S.H.E.E., Bruin Band, and athletics. Students who volunteer not only learn about their community, but they see how their actions can impact and support their community.

Students who volunteer at Bonnabel High School are recognized in the awards ceremony their Senior year of high school as well as as at their commencement ceremony. In order to receive receive recognition at the awards ceremony, students must have at least twenty hours of completed, recorded, community service. In order to receive a Distinction at graduation, students mut have completed 80 hours of community service.

Students should use the following timeframe to complete their service hours:

  • Freshman/9th grade - 10 hours
  • Sophomore/10th grade - 25 hours
  • Junior/11th grade - 25 hours
  • Senior/12th grade - 20 hours

Examples of community service include volunteering at non-profit organizations such as the Children's Museum, Second Harvest Food Bank, a hospital, an elementary or middle school, or at  Bonnabel High School functions in which volunteers are needed.

Volunteer hours must be submitted to Mrs. Tawanda McPherson-Carter  each nine weeks using the Google Form or submitting a printed form found here. Students may also submit print outs of the volunteer hours from a supervisor at the agency in which they volunteered.  All volunteer hours are subject to verification. If volunteering at an agency long term, students need only complete one community service document for those hours. For example, a student volunteering at a public library throughout the semester, for a total of 10 or more hours, would complete one  community service form at the end of their service time.

Students with questions may contact the community service coordinator, Mrs. Tawanda Carter at tawanda.mcpherson-carter@jpschools.org.
